Principle

Every intervention produces outcomes through one or more intermediary systems. The effectiveness of any intervention is therefore constrained by the condition, capacity, and efficiency of the intermediary systems through which it must operate.

Definition

An Intermediary System is any biological, organizational, technological, financial, institutional, environmental, or social system that mediates the relationship between an intervention and its resulting outcome. Interventions do not act directly upon outcomes — they alter intermediary systems whose state determines the probability, magnitude, and durability of the resulting transformation.

Operating Law

Outcome = Intervention × Intermediary System × Environmental Conditions. Organizations frequently optimize interventions while neglecting the intermediary systems responsible for converting those interventions into value. This inversion creates diminishing returns, execution failure, and unrealized potential.
